Descriptors are one of the most common targets in speech therapy for young children. Some kids will start using and understanding early descriptors such as "big" and "wet" fairly early on in their language development -- the 18-month-old who understands the concept of a wet diaper, for example. We generally expect to start seeing the use and understanding of these "sparkle" words begin to really expand as their language moves into 3-4 word utterances, typically around age 3. Sometimes that doesn't happen, though, and that's ok. That's why speech-language pathologists are here!
Descriptors are super fun to work on, and one of our favorite ways to practice them is by heading outside. The great outdoors never has any shortage of great things to talk about and look for, and it's constantly changing, so no two trips will be the same. We created this spring scavenger hunt to encourage our clinic families to get out and go for a walk, and now we're sharing it with you!
