National Physical Therapy Month

October 3, 2025

By Care Options for Kids

Each October, communities across the nation celebrate National Physical Therapy Month to spotlight a profession that touches millions of lives. This annual observance honors the expertise, compassion, and transformative power of physical therapy (PT) and its ability to enable individuals, families, and therapists positively. By helping improve function and increase mobility, PTs play a vital role in helping people move forward with their lives.

To do our part in giving PTs the credit they so deeply deserve throughout National Physical Therapy Month, we’re taking a look at the roots of the profession — and showcasing the incredible difference they make.

At Care Options for Kids, we could not be prouder of our team of compassionate pediatric physical therapists and their dedication to helping families thrive and celebrate every milestone and step forward.  Please join us in helping give them, and all PTs, the recognition and appreciation they deserve this month.

What Is National Physical Therapy Month?

National Physical Therapy Month takes place every October to raise awareness of physical therapy and its critical role in improving mobility, reducing pain, and restoring health. It’s a time to shine a light on the dedicated professionals who guide patients toward recovery and independence, and increase understanding of the many conditions PT can address.

During National Physical Therapy Month, communities and clinicians celebrate the impact of PT. Whether it’s helping an infant learn to crawl, an athlete return to their sport, or a senior maintain independence.

Appreciating Physical Therapy as a Discipline

As an established profession, physical therapy has deep historical roots that go back hundreds of years. In 1813, the Royal Central Institute of Gymnastics was established, becoming the first formal school for what we now recognize as physiotherapy or PT. This early form of “medical gymnastics” would evolve into the practice of kinesiology, or the study of movement, by 1854. The discipline continued to develop, and by 1921, the American Physical Therapy Association was founded, which now represents more than 100,000 PTs and assistants.

In the United States, PT has grown into a robust, evidence‑based profession encompassing specialties like pediatrics, cardiopulmonary, neurology, geriatrics, orthopedics, sports medicine, and more. It continues to be grounded in science, innovation, and an unwavering commitment to restoring function and optimizing lives.

Why National Physical Therapy Month Matters

During National Physical Therapy Month, we not only celebrate heroic recoveries, but we also raise awareness of essential services that are often under‑recognized. This includes options such as pediatric PT, home‑based therapy, and telehealth. Observances such as Physical Therapy Month invite us to appreciate how PT fosters resilience, independence, and inclusive health across all ages and abilities.

The Surprising Scope of Physical Therapy

One of the most amazing truths we underscore every National Physical Therapy Month is the incredible breadth of PT’s impact. Physical therapists are trained to help with a wide range  of conditions for children and adults alike, including:

  • Orthopedic conditions: injuries, fractures, post‑surgical rehabilitation, musculoskeletal imbalances.
  • Neurological differences: cerebral palsy, stroke, traumatic brain injury, and spinal cord injuries.
  • Developmental delays: including autism, Down syndrome, and sensory integration disorders.
  • Prematurity and congenital challenges: aiding infants to build strength and motor skills.
  • Disease and systemic issues: conditions like cancer-related weakness, heart or lung disease.
  • Palliative and pain management: Relieving discomfort and improving mobility when conditions are serious or life-limiting

Innovations like aquatic therapy broaden that reach: water-based PT allows low-impact movement, balance training, and strength work in buoyant, safe environments. This is helpful for neurological disorders, musculoskeletal pain, post‑op recovery, and pediatric disabilities. Every National Physical Therapy Month, reminding ourselves of this broad reach helps families feel seen, and clinicians feel renewed purpose.

How Physical Therapy Empowers Children

When we celebrate National Physical Therapy Month at Care Options for Kids, there’s no better place to focus our hearts than on children. Pediatric PT is a specialized field devoted to supporting infants, toddlers, children, and adolescents through unique movement challenges.

Some of the fantastic ways PT helps kiddos include:

  • Building gross motor skills: including crawling, walking, balancing, running, and jumping.
  • Strengthening hand-eye coordination, balance, and endurance.
  • Supporting children with developmental delays, congenital conditions, or sensory issues
  • Working within families to promote growth, independence, and participation in daily life

During this month and every other, we must celebrate pediatric PT’s role in nurturing future generations, ensuring kids can enjoy movement, play, independence, and confidence.

Celebrating National Physical Therapy Month All Year Long

National Physical Therapy Month may be in October, but its spirit lives all year in every session, milestone, and moment of confidence regained. Here are ways families and clinicians can keep that celebration alive:

  • Share stories: Families and therapists can share successes, big or small, that underscore PT’s power.
  • Educate and advocate: Spread awareness in schools, hospitals, and communities about PT’s breadth and importance.
  • Support access: Advocate for policies that expand insurance coverage, telehealth access, and school‑based PT services
  • Innovate: Embrace tools like aquatic therapy or telehealth to tailor therapy to each child’s lifestyle and needs.

This National Physical Therapy Month, let’s share gratitude for the therapists guiding each small stride, leap, and glide. We also want to celebrate the families who choose hope and growth every day and ensure their kids have the opportunity to be mobile, active, and empowered.

Here’s to National Physical Therapy Month, and to celebrating every step forward — today, and every day.
