What is it really like to work in pediatric home health nursing?
During Nurses Month, we asked our nurses to share what makes this work different and what keeps them here.
Their answer was clear. When nurses have time, consistency, and support, the impact is deeper for both the patient and the nurse.
What makes home health nursing different?
Pediatric home health nursing allows for one on one care in a patient’s home. Instead of managing multiple patients, nurses can focus fully on one child and their family.
“In home health, you have one patient to focus on, and you can really be there for them.” Maria, RN
“It’s more personal. You’re not rushing, you’re actually present.” James, LPN
That focus leads to stronger relationships and more consistent care.
Why do nurses choose home health care?
Many nurses come from hospitals or facility settings and find something different here.
“I’ve worked in hospitals and nursing homes, but here you can truly connect and see the difference you’re making.” Ashley, RN
“You’re not just completing tasks. You’re helping a child grow.” Daniel, LPN
The work becomes less about tasks and more about long term impact.
What moments make nursing meaningful?
The most meaningful moments are often the smallest ones.
Nurses described:
· Watching a child gain a new skill
· Seeing steady progress over time
· Earning a family’s trust
“Seeing a patient improve over time reminds me why I chose nursing.” Brittany, RN
“It’s the small wins, the things that don’t seem big to others, that matter the most.” Luis, LPN
How do nurses build relationships with families?
Care happens in the home, which naturally builds connection over time.
“You build strong relationships with families over time.” Nicole, RN
“They trust you, and you become part of their routine and their life.” Kevin, LPN
Consistency and presence make the difference.
What support do nurses receive?
Support is a key part of the experience.
“Everyone is approachable and willing to help.” Samantha, RN
“I feel supported when I need it.” Robert, LPN
That support allows nurses to stay focused on their patients.
Is home health nursing a good career choice?
For nurses considering a change, the message is simple.
“If you want something more personal and rewarding, this is it.” Jessica, RN
“Take the leap, you won’t regret it.” Anthony, LPN
“It’s the most fulfilling type of nursing I’ve experienced.” Danielle, RN
The Power of Care in Every Moment
This is what that power looks like in practice:
· Time with one patient
· Strong relationships
· Visible progress
· A renewed sense of purpose
Or, as our nurses say:
“You can really be there for them.” Maria, RN
“You actually see the difference you’re making.” Ashley, RN
“Those moments remind you why you became a nurse.” Brittany, RN
