My name is Christian Manon, and I am a Speech Therapist with Care Options for Kids. Having joined the company around a year and a half ago, my background primarily lies in schools and public education, where I served for about eight years. During my time in education, I found the extensive paperwork and additional responsibilities increasingly overwhelming, detracting from my ability to connect with the students I was serving. This realization led me to transition to home health services, a move I was initially apprehensive about due to my comfort with the school schedule. However, the flexibility offered has since allowed me to spend more time with my family and pursue hobbies that were previously out of reach, like hiking and knitting.
On an average day, I see about six to seven kids, with sessions lasting 30 to 45 minutes each. The scheduling at Care Options for Kids efficiently minimizes travel time by planning appointments in a circuit that leads me back home, making my day less about travel and more about the therapy itself. Each therapy session is uniquely tailored to the individual's needs. For example, Chloe's goals, focusing significantly on her eye gaze device, differ vastly from other clients due to our custom approach.
I began working with Chloe about a year ago when she transitioned from another therapist and was just starting to use her eye gaze device for communication. Our goal has been to use this device to fulfill her wants and needs and to participate in social functions, allowing her to express her feelings. Her progress has been incredible, transforming how she communicates with her family and the world around her.
My support extends beyond the child to the family, teaching them how to use therapeutic devices and better understand their child's needs. This education is crucial, as many families are unaware of the resources available to them. By working in the home, where children spend most of their time, we can integrate therapy into their daily lives, making it more applicable and functional amidst real-life distractions like siblings and pets.
