A native Californian, David NT always had an interest in languages and linguistics. He had several friends enrolled in the linguistics program at Tulane University (New Orleans) who were planning careers as speech-language pathologists.
After earning undergraduate degrees in Linguistics and Philosophy at Tulane University, David moved to Portland, Oregon, and enrolled in graduate school at Portland State University.
Prior to starting graduate school with a focus on speech-language pathology, David served an internship at Oregon Health Sciences University (OHSU) to gain more understanding and insight into the work of speech-language pathologists. During a conversation with a supervising SLP at OHSU, she conveyed to David that she absolutely loved working as an SLP and explained how and why working as an SLP was so fulfilling for her.
“That internship was such a positive, enlightening and encouraging experience, and from that point forward I pretty much knew that I wanted to work as an SLP,” adds David.
Supportive Team, Strong Culture
It was during this time that David also started working in an administrative capacity with Care Options for Kids, formerly The Hello Foundation (COFK/THF).
David notes that the company has provided many resources over the years, including professional development for employees, social and recreational events, philanthropy, international service missions, and scholarships.
Care Options for Kids fosters a work environment that celebrates learning and growth, respects individual needs, and encourages community and collaboration. In doing so, it empowers clinicians to provide the best services for students.
“I was inspired by the vision of the company from the very beginning. There's always been a great support system within COFK/THF. They placed priority on service to children, and also supported work/life balance for its employees,” adds David.
Serving Three School Districts in Oregon
David recently started his 16th school year as an SLP, serving the North Douglas, Elkton and Yoncalla School Districts in Douglas County, Oregon.
His daily work schedule involves different models of service delivery, ranging from direct services in the provider's space at school, to supporting students in various contexts school-wide. David truly enjoys the variety of his job and the therapy and support needs related to speech, language and communication.
“It's a privilege to be involved in the lives, learning and growth of children, and to be in a position of service and advocacy for children as part of the job.”
“There have been many times that I've worked as part of a team to support an individual to use communication to accomplish something important or life-enhancing. I've definitely felt proud and privileged to be a part of those client/team experiences and accomplishments.”
An avid photographer, David enjoys spending time with family and friends, traveling, live music, art, hiking, running, and soccer.
When asked who inspires him most, David shared, “My mom is an absolute legend and an inspiration to many. Her limitless support of others, kindness, love and compassion make her an inspiration to me and to many other people. My son is awesome in so many ways, and he also constantly inspires me."
David’s Tips for New Clinicians
-
Building rapport with kids is so important. Participation, "buy in", making changes, and progress are more possible and likely when kids feel comfortable, feel secure, feel respected, and feel good about themselves. Establishing and maintaining rapport is key to a positive and productive working relationship with kids.
-
Be flexible. Providing services in schools can be busy, exciting, involve many people, and involve unexpected changes and challenges. It's a strength to be able to adapt to changes and to try alternative approaches and strategies. Flexibility is also a great thing to model for others.
-
Have an open mind. There is always something more we can learn from the children and families we serve, as well as from the teachers, staff and specialists that we team with and work with on a daily basis. Other people's information, input, ideas and perspectives often help in optimizing services.
